Hello and welcome to neilbutler.com.au.

As you can see from the header, there are a few things to unpack here! Each area is discussed below - use the menu to jump straight to that section of the page or scroll on down. The sections are presented in alphabetical order.

I dipped my toe in the world of book publishing, somewhat accidentally, in 1985. I was one of the first teachers in Victoria to be given the opportunity to build a specialist computer centre in a secondary school (Churchill Post Primary School, later Kurnai College - Churchill Campus). We installed the state-of-the-art word processing system called Edword which I documented in what we now call a user guide. The Victorian State Computer Education Centre published a Guide to Edword and I was acknowledged as one of the contributors. It is apparently still available in the National Library of Australia and has the ISBN 0724139354.

Wind the clock forward to October 2010 when a more deliberate attempt to publish a book was successful with the release of It IS Who You Know. This book focused on how you might go about improving your business networking skills and sold something like 30 copies! I have the original electronic version and maybe one printed copy somewhere but you are going to struggle to find one anywhere out there.

Now as we enter 2026, I have written what I guess will be my thid book - Change Change And The Art Of Transformagination®. The concept of Transformagination is a tricky one for this site so to find out more please visit the Change Change web site at www.changechange.au.

The publishing process started in November 2025 and we expect the book to be available during the first quarter of 2026.

One night in late 2007, my daughter Lucy was asked to present a radio program by herself for the first time. She was quite anxious about that and so she and I headed off to the studios of 94.1FM 3WBC in suburban Melbourne and presented together, playing songs that had been on the charts on that day in the past 30 or 40 years.

The bug had bitten and before long I had my own program - Radio Ga Ga - playing the same kind of music each month. After relocating to Geelong eight years later, the program was given a new name - Turn Up Your Radio - and moved to 94.7 The Pulse, Geelong's leading community radio station.

In March 2020, I took a call from the station manager to talk about how COVID-19 lockdowns meant that the station was reducing its live broadcasting schedule to a couple of hours a day for the next "few weeks" until the lockdowns stopped. Fortuitously, the station decided to put me onto a show with Rob Cameron who had been presenting a sports program and The 2 Blokes Chatting Radio Show was born. Every Saturday morning since (with the exception of a break over the various Christmas periods), the program has gone to air with a much more on-going feel to the time slot! Rob and I have been incredibly fortunate to have interview some greats of the music, entertainment, sport and other fields of endeavour - click on the button below to reveal the list!

If you are struggling with some of these names, check out The 2 Blokes Chatting Radio Show web site at www.2bc.radio.

Also, somewhat fortuitously - right place, right time - I was invited to be part of the 3WBC VFL Commentary Team in 2010. After calling VFL - and later - VFLW matches with 3WBC, I established an online station (gofooty.live) to call Geelong VFL and VFLW matches. Sadly, that stopped when COVID-19 arrived and made a significant impact on these two leagues.

Since 2023, I have become a member of the Womens' Australian Rules Football (WARF) Radio team, giving me the chance to call football at the elite level - the AFLW.

In October 2025, I called my 200th game of VFL, VFLW and AFLW football. I have called games from a range of iconic locations including many that I first visited as a younger person following VFL (later AFL) games - click on the button below to reveal the list.

After working in the corporate sector for over 20 years, I felt it was the right time, in 2011, to establish my own business to manage a number of projects and activities for our clients.

The business started out as Xera Consulting but, as the business started to build and our point of difference became evident, we changed out name to Untypical Thinking. Many people would have described the business as a small consulting firm but we felt that we different and that the term "consulting" made us sound too much like the thousands of other small consulting businesses.

With the addition of  several other services and a move away from the traditional "consulting" focus, we dropped the "thinking" part from our name and simply became Untypical.

These days, Untypical focuses on bringing change and transformation to business of all shapes and sizes, with a preference to work with organisations that have a presence across regional Australia.

We operate under several brands - click on the button below to reveal the list of brands and links to the individual web sites.

Looking for someone to host your next conference, seminar or event? I may well be the person you are looking for!

I have experience in hosting business conferences, seminars, sports award nights, training programs, strategy workshops and a range of other events where my clients have needed an engaging master of ceremonies to ensure a successful outcome. I would describe my style as relaxed and informal.

My preference is to work with organisations and businesses who are either located in regional Australia or who have a membership or client base that is predominantly located outside of the metropolitan areas. That said, if you would like to discuss my suitability as the host of your next event, please reach out for a chat.

In 2016, I discovered the world of podcasting. After a few test runs, I found that my niche is the world of conversational podcasting - or as I like to call it, the creation and publishing of podversations.

I have subsequently developed two brands to manage my podcasting activities - Podversations and CLIRA.

Through Podversations, we can assist you in the production of your podcast or provide you with a complete end-to-end podversation service, including hosting your conversational podcast.

CLIRA (Celebrating Life In Regional Australia) focuses specifically on the full production of podversations for regional councils, business groups and other organisations based outside of the metropolitan areas of Australia.

Please click on one of the following tiles to visit a selection of podcast series we have produced.

This might be an unusual heading to have on this page but it is the closest description I can find to explain the sort of roles I can play either as an employee or when contracted to an organisation.

The traditional model of creating jobs that have very generic job titles like Business Analyst, Change Manager, Program Director is really outdated. Sadly, recruitment companies (and as a result, their clients) still operate by throwing a job title on the top of a job advertisement and then use some sort of filtering mechanism to choose candidates.

When you limit yourself to rectangular roles, you will never be able to attract stars into them. Check out my LinkedIn post about this.

And so, while I have operated in all sorts of job titles (predominantly Change Manager), I am so much more than a job title. If you click on the button below, you'll see how I describe myself on LinkedIn and why Problem Solver seems to be more appropriate than anything else.

Are you looking for a professional voiceover artist for your business, club or organisation? From on-hold messaging to video soundtracks, I am able to provide you with consistent and professional sounding audio for just about any application.

Recorded using a RODE Procaster Microphone in my home-based studio and edited using Adobe Audition, my voice can become the voice of your organisation. And unlike the cheaper options you can find online, I will still be here next week, next month, next year to create a consistent and recognisable voice for your brand.

Having grown up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne (Australia), I started my professional life as a secondary school teacher in regional Victoria. In 1988, I left teaching for "six months" to see what was happening in the outside world and how that could be applied to my teaching.  Here we are, all these years later and the "six months break from teaching" continues.

Since 1989, I have worked in a range of industries including supply chain and logistics, fuels and lubricants, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), higher education, financial services, corporate real estate, media and not-for-profit. I have gained experience in a wide variety of local, regional and global roles including education and training, business and technical support, credit management, business process improvement, business analysis, change management and, most recently, transformation leadership. A number of these roles allowed me to work across all parts of Australia, creating a passion for regional Australia and the people who live and work there.

I have two adult children - Lucy, who is a school teacher in regional Victoria and Sam who works in commercial real estate research. In March 2021, I graduated to the rank of grandfather with the arrival of Maverick and in 2025, Ned arrived to double the number of grandchildren. I have been a continuous paid-up member of the Fitzroy and, subsequently, the Brisbane Lions AFL club since the start of the 1983 season which has provided me with five premierships in that time.

My music collection is primarily focused on the years 1960 - 1990 with The Beatles, Dire Straits, Cold Chisel, Queen, Eagles, Little River Band and Fleetwood Mac being the bands that dominate the collection with a number of Australian solo artists ranking highly as well - Russell Morris, Marcia Hines, Brian Cadd and Jimmy Barnes being among the favourites.

I enjoy red wine - especially Shiraz from the Grampians and Heathcote - and drink double espressos a couple of times a day.
